China bans smoking in indoor spaces
”Tobacco brings 10th of country's tax earnings”
This sentence explains us why if tobacco is too bad for our health the politicians don’t ban it. Smoking gives to the country a lot of money, and not only in China. I am sure that in Spain, USA, UK, Germany and the rest of countries in the world earn a lot of money with tobacco, only with the taxes. It is a machine of money, people die about the tobacco but it gives money to the country.
Nowadays China has implemented a new law that ban people who want to smoke in indoor places, as what we made here in Spain time ago. This is a complicated topic because smokers are against this new law and no smokers are really happy with that. I as a no smoker I think that is complicated to go out the place for smoke, when you are drinking with your friends, or after the lunch, with your morning coffee, etc. But people who don’t smoke will appreciate this act. In China the problem is that half of men smoke, and it was typical smoke inside hospitals in the waiting room. They are worst than here...
But for example at the moment the law won’t penalize people to smoke in indoor places; they are introducing this law little by little. But if they don’t penalize, who will follow this law? Also we have to remember (as the notice explain) that smoking-related diseases killed 1.2 million Chinese people in 2005 and predicted that this number will rise up to 3.5 million in 2030.
What do you think about this smoking law without penalization? It will be success?

As Santi said, half of men in China smoke.
ResponderEliminarChina isa country addicted to tabacco, in which smoking is pervasive, and this makes that changing the minds of people seem an impossible mission.
I have read from other sources that China consumes one third of the tobacco that is smoked in the world. There are 350 million smokers, 700 million are passive smokers and a million people die each year from its effects.
But at the same time, China is the largest producer and supplies the world 42 percent of their dependence on nicotine at unbeatable prices.
In my opinion it will be very difficult to change the mentality of the Chinese, and if the do not penalize those who violate the law, nobody will take it seriously.
On the other hand, the Chinese are very strict and respectful people, and maybe this law might work ..
Interesting post Santi; as you said, all the governments benefit from the sale of tobacco and although they know that it’s a harmful product for our health, they don’t want to ban it because they will lose lots of money.
ResponderEliminarA few months ago, I read an article talking about the increase of tobacco taxes and the percentage that it’s spent on taxes when consumers buy it. I already knew that they were really high, as well as alcohol products, but I was shocked. It seems that for every 1€ spent on tobacco, 0.84€ are taxes…enough said!
As for the new law in China, as Paula said Chinese people are very respectful and strict and maybe this will work out without any penalization, but on the other hand, it will be difficult that everybody respect this, so in my opinion they need to introduce new fines.
I'm so happy for China! :)
